Before understanding Sinus Lifting or Sinus Base Elevation, we need to know the answer to the sinus question. Sinus is the name given to the hollow air cavities at the back of the cheek and above the roots of the upper molars in humans. The tooth roots of humans grow towards these gaps.
People who have missed teeth and apply to our clinic for treatment are decided to undergo implant procedure as a result of the examination performed by our specialists. Sometimes there may not be enough bone thickness in the sinus areas. In these cases, bone thickness in the area needs to be increased.
The process of increasing the bone thickness in the sinus area for the implant procedure is called Sinus Lifting, Sinus Grafting, or Sinus Elevation.
During the Sinus Lifting procedure, the membrane covering the sinus base is removed and bone powder is placed underneath. At the end of this procedure, the sinus base is raised. It can take approximately several months for the graft to mature. After all these steps are completed, the implant can be applied to the patient.
Thanks to Sinus Lifting, also known as Sinus Base Elevation, adequate volume is created in the missing bone tissue for the length and width of the implant to be placed and the person has the chance to have an implant.
What is Sinus?
Sinus is the name given to the air cavities in the bones around the nose in humans. The sinuses open into the nose through small channels.
Sinuses are divided into 4 groups. These are;
Maxillary Sinuses (Cheek Sinuses),
Frontal Sinuses (Forehead Sinuses),
Anterior and Posterior Ethmoid Sinuses (Sinuses located in the front and back of the eyes),
and Sphenoid Sinuses
(Intracranial Sinuses)
These bone cavities, which we call sinuses, are covered with a layer of mucous membrane. The secretions of the glands in the sinus area drain into the nasal cavity.
What is Sinus Lifting (Sinus Base Elevation)?
Sinus Lifting is a treatment method that we apply when the bone structure (bone height) in the teeth area in the upper jaw is not sufficient for our patients who need implant treatment to be treated.
In patients who need implant treatment, if the vertical distance required for the implant in the region of the molar and premolar teeth in the upper jaw is not adequate, sinus lifting is performed to increase the bone height.
Sinus Lifting treatment can be performed using two different methods;
Lateral (Open) Sinus Lifting
Internal (Closed) Sinus Lifting
How is Sinus Lifting Performed?
Sinus Lifting treatment is a surgical operation performed by our dentists who are experts in this field by applying local or general anesthesia to the patient.
The general condition of the patient is examined with a preliminary examination performed by our specialists before this procedure, which can be called Sinus Lift or Sinus Elevation.
The height of the existing maxillary alveolar bone, the size of the maxillary sinus, the presence of sinus base septums, sinus maxillaris pathologies, antero-posterior relationship of the maxilla and mandible are investigated by applying various clinical and radiographic techniques.
The sinus area is accessed through a small opening in the patient's mouth. The sinus membrane covering the inside of the sinus is raised at the desired rate and bone powder and grafting are applied to the resulting cavity and the area is closed by suturing.
Local anesthesia is generally used during the Sinus Lifting procedure. The average treatment time is 15 -20 minutes.
What Should Be Considered After Sinus Lifting?
Our dentists inform our patients whose Sinus Lifting treatment has been completed about the points to be considered after the treatment. Some of the points to be considered after the treatment until your stitches are removed (it takes an average of 1 week) are as follows:
Although it is natural to experience bleeding in the form of leakage in the first 2-3 days after treatment and to smell or taste blood in your mouth, you can contact your dentist in case of any suspicion.
It is normal to have swelling after the treatment. In the first 24 hours, a cold compress should be applied to the operation area from the outside with an ice pack.
The medicines recommended by your dentist should be taken on time, without interruption and as prescribed.
Any anticoagulants (including aspirin) should not be used after treatment.
Patients should not eat or drink anything for the first 2-3 hours after the treatment is completed, and then consume soft and warm foods.
After treatment, patients should try to chew the food with the other side for 1-2 days to protect the intervened area in the mouth.
Patients who have undergone Sinus Lifting treatment should avoid pressurized nasal cleansing in the first week and keep the mouth closed when sneezing.
Smoking should be avoided in the first 24 hours after treatment.
Your stitches are removed 1 week after the operation.
In Which Conditions Cannot Sinus Lifting Treatment Be Performed?
As with all other treatment methods for Sinus Lifting treatment, there are situations where its implementation is inconvenient. Sinus lifting procedure is not performed if patients have diseases or habits that will adversely affect the treatment.
Some conditions that our specialists consider negative for sinus lifting treatment are as follows;
Having undergone radiotherapy to the maxillary region,
Having uncontrolled systemic diseases,
Excessive tobacco and alcohol consumption,
Maxillary sinus infections and pathologic lesions,
Those with chronic sinusitis and severe allergic conditions,
And those with psychological problems.
When is an Implant Placed After Sinus Lifting?
After the Sinus Lifting procedure is completed, we cannot give a clear answer when the implants will be placed.
Your implants can be placed during the Sinus Lifting operation, or implant placement can be performed with a different operation between 2-6 months after the operation.
This process is decided during a detailed examination by our specialists in our clinics, taking into account the variables of;
The amount of bone lost,
The amount of bone volumized,
Sinus Lifting surgery technique,
The length of the area to be operated on,
Number of implants,
Implant length,
and Diameter of the implant.
